Zomba Forest Lodge - Cozy, friendly Bed & Breakfast Accommodation in the mountains of Zomba, Malawi
Home away from Home...Zomba Forest Lodge is a small colonial cottage nestled on the escarpment of Zomba Mountain, just within the Forest Reserve in Malawi. It lies in 20 acres of mixed woodland, home to samango and vervet monkeys, a number of antelope and a host of birds, butterflies and flowers.
Zomba Forest Lodge has been a rest house/lodge for the past 30 years or so but it is now not just a lodge, it is our home. It is not just a business, it is a lifestyle we choose. The atmosphere here is intimate, cosy and friendly.
We want to make sure that you have a great time, whatever you wish to do, whether that is hiking all day or spending a hard day relaxing listening to the sounds of the forest...
Zomba Forest Lodge Accommodation
We have 4 lovely en-suite bedrooms, and like everything else in the house, they are small but perfectly formed. Each one is simple but stylish and tastefully decorated.
We have 2 double rooms , 1 twin room and 1 that can be made into either a double or a twin so in total we can sleep 8 people. Anymore than that and it would feel a little crowded!
We have no electricity here but don’t worry, you won’t be sitting around in the dark - we have paraffin lamps, candles and a few solar lanterns as well so at night, it is wonderfully atmospheric. The evenings feel lovely and cosy especially, in the winter with the roaring log fire!
To add to the atmosphere, we have two adorable, playful dogs who absolutely love having people around, adults and children alike and would welcome an extra person (or 2, or 3) to play with!
Because we have no electricity - Please ensure that ALL electrical items are fully charged before getting here as we will not be able to charge anything for you!
Dining
If you choose to come and visit us, you will not leave empty-bellied! We both love our food and we take it very seriously, our guests have come to expect some of the best food in Malawi and we aim to keep that up!
Due to the lack of electricity, we serve a set menu for lunch and dinner so please let us know if you have any dietary requirements, and that includes anything you may be allergic to or simply don’t like.
Rates: Our rates now vary depending on how long you wish to spend with us so the longer you stay, the cheaper it is! Please contact us for availability and prices.
Our rates include your lovely room with en-suite bathroom, full breakfast, lunch AND a beautiful 3 course dinner.
We also offer various discounts: residents rates, whole lodge bookings and seasonal offers - Seasonal offers will typically be in January, February and March, and then November until mid-December so please contact us for more information so that you don’t miss out!
Activities
The lodge lies in 20 acres of mixed woodland, varying from indigenous rainforest in the valley by the stream, to pine on the slopes and giant eucalyptus trees overhanging the garden and there are lots of little trails meandering through, perfect for those after a little wander.
If you are after some more serious hiking, there are a number of trails from the lodge, including a couple that will take you up to the Plateau itself but be prepared, getting up there alone, will take you 1.5 hours.
There is also an immense variety of birds, including the rare white winged apalis, the crimson wing and the double-coloured forest sunbird feeding from the flowers mere inches from the veranda, a real treat for the eyes. For bird enthusiasts, there are plenty to keep you busy!
Please contact your hosts Tom & Petal at Zomba Forest Lodge directly for bookings and enquiries.
Because we live half way up a mountain in the middle of Africa, our internet signal is not great so please bear with us when emailing us- we always try our best to respond within 24 hours but sometimes, we simply can't so please be patient. Please send Whatsapp if you cannot get through to us on our phones!
